Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center has been an anchor institution in North Central Connecticut since its founding by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry in 1897 . Licensed for 617 beds and 65 bassients, it is one of the largest hospitals in Connecticut and the largest Catholic hospital in New England.

In 1990, Saint Francis affiliated with Mount Sinai Hospital to create a new regional healthcare system. This was the first recorded instance of collaboration between a Catholic hospital and a Jewish hospital in United States history. In October 1995, the institutions completed a formal corporate merger.

A regional teaching hospital and referral center, Saint Francis provides sophisticated, contemporary medicine with major clinical concentrations in cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, women's services and rehabilitation. Each of these centers of excellence focuses on quality, caring and the dignity of every patient.

Saint Francis' history of leadership continues today with innovative programs responsive to community needs. The hospital's unique programs in diabetes and traumatic brain injury are regarded as national models.

The first hospital in Connecticut to create a coronary care unit, Saint Francis expanded its commitment to cardiac care in 1991 when it established the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute of Connecticut, another first for the state. The institute now ranks among the largest open heart centers in the region.

In the field of cancer care, Saint Francis patients have access to more than 100 National Institutes of Health-sponsored cancer research projects, and the hospital is designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Teaching Hospital Cancer Program.

In 1995, Saint Francis opened The Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital. The 60-bed comprehensive medical rehabilitation facility provides a level of care that previously was not available in Hartford. It offers major programs in traumatic brain injury, stroke/neurological rehabilitation, industrial rehabilitation/sports medicine and general rehabilitation, including spinal cord injury and orthopedics.

In 1996, Saint Francis completed a 10-story Patient Care Tower, which provides a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient services in a building that is comfortable and convenient for patients and in 2011, the hospital grew again with completion of the 318,000-square-foot John T. O’Connell Tower - providing a new chapter in the advancement of world-class care for our community.

An enlarged Emergency Department with 70 treatment areas and 13 sheltered ambulance bays
19 operating rooms
6 dedicated orthopedic operating rooms and 66 private inpatient orthopedic beds for the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI)
36 private patient rooms
A new rooftop helipad
